Thing to do when visiting Chester Chester Racecourse
The home of Chester Races is the beautiful 65-acre Roodee- the "Sweet rood of Chester" (Gascoigne 1575) whose curious name derives from the Saxon Rood- a cross and the Norse suffix Eye- meaning an island literally 'The Island of the Cross'.
In Saxon times, the waters of the Dee covered the whole of this area with the exception of a small island upon which stood a stone cross, the stump of which you may still see in the middle of the racecourse today.
The Chester Race Company Limited [“CRCL”] has been established since 1892. In 2002, CRCL acquired Bangor on Dee racecourse and in 2003, the Express Holiday Inn Hotel at Chester Racecourse franchise.
In 2006, Chester Race Company assumed responsibility for all events that take place on the Roodee and as a result, everything that takes place has been subjected to a rigorous review process to ensure each event is in line with the Chester Racecourse hallmark of excellence.
